Sultry Thara

Photo Courtesy: TharaShe’s got an amazing voice, gorgeous looks and the dedication to work harder than anyone else in the music scene. Simply put, she’s a perfectionist! She fruitfully allows her career to continuously reach new heights and takes great pride in knowing her fans will always be a source of support for her. Her bio states that she, “…is a unique beauty with supreme undeniable talents. She moves between the worlds of music, acting, modeling and dance with the absolute greatest of ease….While she can easily opt to get by with her stunning God-given looks alone, she prefers sticking to a tremendous work ethic to accomplish goals and allow her talents to fully shine.”

There’s no need to search because it’s quite simple to see that I’m taking about none other than then the girl with one of the most sensual voices on the mic – Thara.

I can sit here all day and talk about this amazing singer, but I know you’d rather hear it from the Diva herself! I recently had the chance to interview Thara for a Bravura Artist exclusive, and it went a something like this…

Tirusha: Thara, if you could describe yourself in five words, which ones would they be?

Thara: Honest, determined, focused, silly, perfectionist

Many of your songs are topping the charts right now, but the most talked about track is “Murder” with Jay Sean! Tell us a little bit about the song and how you two linked up to make it happen!

Well I don’t about topping the charts, but they do ok…haha! “Murder” happened when Jay Sean came to NYC to work with my producer J Remy. Jay and I decided to do a duet together because we both felt like it would be a lot of fun, and it was also something he had never done before. We wrote the song together, and after the first day, we knew it was a big record.

Career wise, who has given you good advice?
I have got a lot of good advice from so many people. Remy, Duro, and even Clue had good advice for me when I first started out, and was signed to Desert Storm.

What has been one of your most memorable moments musically?

Oh, it would have to be opening for Ne-Yo in Japan! Three sold out nights, thousands of people and everyone knowing my songs! That was amazing!

Speaking about that, tell us a little bit about that experience!

Well like I said, it was a lot of fun. The place was packed for three straight nights! Jay Sean came to do “Murder” with me as well; that was great. The crowd was surprised he was there. Ne-Yo was very cool and very encouraging too.

In the past you’ve also worked with Scott Storch and Fabulous! What’s it like to be associated with huge Hip-Hop heavyweights?

Well, Fabulous and I were signed to the same label for a while. So DJ Clue wanted me on a song with Fab. Remy and I went to the studio and knocked out my parts for “Ghetto” really quickly. But being around those guys just taught me that everyone is the same really, just because they are famous, or drive Bentley’s doesn’t mean they don’t also like pizza or like to watch a movie; they just get to do it in a lil more style then we do…haha!

Do you get excited over the thought about a number one record?

Well, I haven’t had a #1 record yet, but yes, I get excited when my song plays on the radio or when I see the video on TV.

How do you like having a solo singing career?

It’s a lot of work; it gets lonely, and it can wear you down. Being solo means the music rests squarely on your shoulders. But I don’t think I would want to be in a group. I mean I would not SAY NEVER, but I doubt it.

Thara’s album is a big POP/R&B project which already boasts heavyweights like John Legend, Fabulous, Fat Man Scoop, and co-writes with Makeba, Lil Eddie, Shamora Crawford & Teron Biel and her production team, The Orange Factory. Her musical direction extends far beyond the urban zone with her appeal reaching Asia and India as well as the UK and European markets.

Your album is going to be beyond big! It’s going to be beyond amazing! I’ve got it…it’s going to be ‘bravura!’ What was it like working with such talent for your album? First let’s talk about John Legend!

John is a sweetie. I am so proud of his success. He really did it. I am so thankful he agreed to work with me. We wrote “Maybe” together in a few hours and recorded it the same day. It was a lot of fun and actually quite easy. He is VERY easy to work with.

Now Fat Man Scoop is also going to be on the album. You recorded your hit track “Jump On” with him and shot the video too. What was that experience like?

Scoop is a big teddy bear. I love him. He has a massive heart, and always tells me nice things about myself! LOL… He is a walking Thara advertisement. He didn’t have to back me like he did, but he went above and beyond the call of duty to do JUMP ON with me. THANKS SCOOOP!

That’s great when someone can support you as much as he did. If you would work with any mainstream producer who would it be and why?
Hmm…Well I have worked with a lot of them; but I never got to work with Will I Am. I think he is super talented!

What about in the Desi scene?

Honestly? I don’t know many producers in that scene other then the obvious ones. Rishi, Ishi, Alan Sampson…they are all great. My sound isn’t about being Desi; it’s not about being anything really. It’s about being ME. I am just NOT caught up in color or cultural ideas. If a producer is Desi then great, let’s work; if he is Jewish…great lets work; if he is Cuban…great!

What many people don’t know about Thara is that she’s also an actress! She’s acted on Soaps such as “One Life to Live,” and “Guiding Light.” Many also caught a glimpse of this beauty in the Spike Lee pilot, “Miracle’s Boys,” and you can look for her in Rishi Kapoor’s upcoming Bollywood crossover film, “Sambar Salsa.” She is also currently featured as Sean Paul’s leading lady in his new video for “Ever Blazin’.” Thara is on a roll and there’s no stopping her!

What is the biggest challenge of being a celebrity?

Smiling all the time! I get sad days just like everyone else, but I can’t show them! Oh…and staying skinny! I like chocolate cake as much as the next girl!

You’ve accomplished so much so young, do you allow yourself to look back?

I am not much of a nostalgia buff. I keep it moving, I keep my head forward, my eyes on the prize, and my heart in the moment.

What advice do you have for those who want to make a career in singing?

Do it for the music, not because you wanna be famous.

Do you have any final words for the readers of Bravura Artist Magazine?
Thanks for your time Tirusha! To all the readers, believe in yourself. Even if others tell you that you can’t do something. If you think you can, then try. Follow your heart. Don’t let people sway your hearts true feelings. And be sure to go to iTunes and check me out! The new EP will be up on iTunes June 6th!
