Album Review – The International Idol

The International IdolBased in Portland, Oregon, Vimal Patel aka DJ Desiplaya is the Co-Founder and prime producer of Xplicit Desi Vibes - a group which can easily be called the #1 South Asian remix and production crew in the U.S. DJ Desiplaya asserts that all members of XDV have, “a passion for music and love what they do.”

Desiplaya began DJing at the age of 16, and since then, he’s always felt at one with the art of music. When he entered into this industry, it was his goal to release a mixtape which would one, set him apart from other producers in the scene, and two, catch the attention of not only South Asian listeners, but music lovers across the globe with his fusion of different genres.

With the recent release of his highly anticipated mixtape, “The International Idol,” he’s set a new standard in underground urban Desi music. The 21-track mixtape not only features some of Desiplaya’s biggest and best re-productions, but it also features an exclusive listen to his original production as well. From Hip-Hop to Bhangra to Bollywood and Rock, this mixtape is filled with something for everyone.

Desiplaya begins his independent release with Kehta Hai Pal Pal Tumse Remix, featuring the seductive vocals of UK’s very own Veronica, as well as, Grammy-nominee artist Lil Wayne. Taking this ever-so romantic Bollywood tune and giving it a smooth reggaeton turn, it still remains sensuous and appeals to today’s generation with an added twist of Hip-Hop.

Getting straight into what he does best, Desiplaya’s second track is Maybe Remix by Jay SeanDesiplaya takes the track a mind-blowing reggaeton production by Winsin & Yandel (Puerto Rican GrammyLatin Grammy-winning, & American Grammy-winners) and adds Jay Sean’s a’capellas to the beat making this classic track into a new favorite.

Desiplaya later switches it up with the song Patron Tequila Remix by the Paradiso Girls featuring Lil Jon. Compared to the original version of this song, Desiplaya takes this Pop song and gives it a make-over to a Rock song!

Stepping over into Desiplaya’s original production, the first track to showcase this impressive skill is Rockin’ With Me, featuring the rapping talents of Kaly - who is also featured on two other original productions by Desiplaya on this mixtape, Movin Up and 100 Bars. Desiplaya also crossed borders into London, where he worked with producer Kami K and MC’s Menis & Drilla Kid for the track OK.

Tera Pyar Remix by Desiplaya features Fat Joe & Alyssia; it’s a song for anyone who’s a fan of Punjabi and Hip-Hop. This track is also a great example of what Desiplaya does best – fusing together Indian style vocals & beats with mainstream tracks. This is also evident in the track Gal Sun Remix, also featuring the vocals of Alyssia but this time he flips it with Yung Berg.

There’s a reason that I gave Desiplaya the hook “The International Idol.” It’s because he stands as a role model for young DJs and producers who want to make an entry into the South Asian music scene. He’s worked hard and never took ‘no’ for an answer. He made his name known with one mixtape release after the other & quickly attained a massive following. He’s had the opportunity to work and learn from some of the best and freshest artists in today’s urban Desi music scene. “The International Idol” is a compilation of DJ Desiplaya’s best work over the past four years and a peak into the future of what else is to come from DJ Desiplaya and Xplicit Desi Vibes. Finally, a mixtape has been released which appeals to music lovers of all different genres and this isn’t the last you’ll hear of DJ Desiplaya!
