A Flooded Nation in Need

The summer of 2010 has been one of the worse summer’s for Pakistan as this has been their worse flooding situation in 80 years.

On August 14th, Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani said, in a televised address, that 20 million people, about one-ninth of the population, had been displaced by the disaster.

The BBC reported that, “flooding began on July 22 in the province of Baluchistan,” which then leaked into the, “the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province in the northwest before flowing south into Punjab and Sindh.”

Due to the flood death toll estimates reached from 1,300 to 1,600.

Since these horrific floods have devastates Pakistan, numerous nations from across the world have been sending out their own stream of announcements stating how they are going to help the nation and its victims.

Honestly though, from where and whom is the aid coming from? We question this important aspect because after the aftermath of January’s earthquake in Haiti, more victims were saved and pulled from rubble by neighboring Haitians and later by the “publicized” international rescue teams.

And it’s because of such actions that people knew that the same was to happen in Pakistan. And sadly, it has happened. The BBC has also reported that, “The Red Cross, for example, has supported the Pakistani Red Crescent in assisting about 300,000 flood victims.”

  • Michelle Obama Goes Desi
    no responses - Posted 11.24.09

Alright, well she doesn’t completely ‘go Desi,’ but she did rock an exclusive, one-of-a-kind strapless dress by Indian-born designer, Naeem Khan. The dress Mrs. Obama wore to the White House’s first State Dinner (with India) was a classic floor-length cut in a subdued gold fabric and paired it with a light shawl. Her makeup was effortless, and her hair was perfected into an updo. Simply put, the entire ensemble seemed traditionally feminine and sophisticated, reminiscent of the first lady’s more conservative predecessors. But knowing Mrs. Obama, there had to be some flair into her outfit. She had a lovely and elaborate pair of chandelier earrings and Desi glittering gold-and-diamond bangles piled high on her left arm. This might have been a big night for the Obamas and Singhs, but it was also a big night for designer Naeem Khan. Though he’s styled many superstars, styling the First Lady is an honor all in it’s own!

  • Obama Receives Novel Peace Prize

Photo Courtesy: Getty ImagesToday is yet another historic day in American and international history. President Barack Obama became the 3rd sitting US President to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Norwegian-based Nobel committee said they, “had made extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation.” The committee chairman (as seen in the picture), Thorbjoern Jagland, said, “they had attached special importance to Mr. Obama’s vision of a world without nuclear weapons.”

The Norwegian Nobel Committee did nothing but praise President Obama for “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples,” highlighting his ‘fledgling push for nuclear disarmament and his outreach to the Muslim world.’

It’s without surprise that President Obama has become the new recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. With almost a year coming to an end, from when he was first elected into office, he has strived his hardest and his entire team has worked day-in-and-out to make the US economy better than when it was before, forge stronger international relationships, and put an end to the war in the Middle East.

  • Capitalism: A Love Story

Capitalism: A Love StoryFreedom of speech.

I feel that’s the one “right” of all Americans which they feel the need to express all the time.

Well, keeping that in mind, one can say whatever he or she wants to about director Michael Moore; however, when it comes to picking the subject matters of his documentary films, he picks exactly what will get to his audience the most and make them quench inside.

First there was Fahrenheit 9/11, about the invasion of Iraq it won. It was so good that it was awarded during the Palme d’Or at 2004 Cannes. Three years later came Sicko, which pushed some buttons in the healthcare sector! And if that wasn’t enough to turn some heads, Moore is on the verge of releasing his next film Capitalism: A Love Story, looking at the ’causes of the collapse of the century.’

    The
film will explore the central causes of the global economic meltdown and take a (somewhat) ‘comical look’ at the corporate and political shenanigans, which emcompass what Moore has described as, “the biggest robbery in the history of this country.” Simply put, it’s a ‘the massive transfer of U.S. taxpayer money to private financial institutions.’

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. Moore tweeted on his Twitter today that he’s, “Heading over to NPR to do half hour live on Talk of the Nation. Tonite’s the big DC premiere of Capitalism, many from Congress to attend” via his Berry. Let’s hope that there’s a positive reaction outside the movie theater and that those attending are there to support him.

Capitalism: A Love Story opens in theaters nationwide on October 2, 2009. Be sure to check your local listings for showtimes & wishing Michael Moore much success with the release!

  • Check-In Time

Going on vacation, whether it’s with the kids, your boys, or a weekend-getaway with the girls, the most important part of any trip is the hotel. It’s the place where we’ll wine & dine, and rest our feet after a long night of dancing at the local clubs or hiking in the rainforest trails. I love to travel, but I sure as heck can’t afford some of these amazing ‘heavens on Earth,’ that I’m about to share with you!

This was the summer of all summers! The weather was hot, the oceans were rockin’ with good surf waves, and the beaches were loaded with cute, single guys (what else did you expect me to say?!).

I made a list of my Top 10 hotels from around the world and have started my international getaway! You better check-in before it gets to late!

January 20, 2009, as we’ve said before, is a date which will go down in history, as President Barack H. Obama was sworn in as the 44th President of the United States of America. After the inauguration, President Obama and his wife Michelle took part in the parade to the White House, walking parts of the way. After that, they had their reception lunch with members of Congress, only to get ready for a night full of excitement, celebration, friends, and family.

President and Mrs. Obama were the Guests of Honor at not one, not two, but ten different Inaugural Balls this year.

The first event where the Obamas made their entrance was the Neighborhood Inaugural Ball, which took place at the Washington Convention Center. This was a special inaugural celebration  because it was open to all Americans, making President Barack Obama the first person to host an event such as the “Neighborhood Inaugural Ball.” This night was filled with many special celebrity guests such as Beyonce, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ray Romano, Jamie Fox, and others, who hosted, performed, and brought sheer entertainment to all those who attended.

  • Welcome President Barack Obama

obama5sdc.jpgToday has indeed become a day which will change history books forever. Barack H. Obama has been sworn in as the 44th President of the United States of America.

Barack Obama placed his hands on the Bible, which was last used during the inauguration of Abraham Lincoln, and said, “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

With smiles on the faces of his two daughters, Malia and Sasha, and his lovely wife, Michelle, right by his side, Barack Obama stepped up to the microphone and delivered one of his best speeched ever, and one which will be remembered by generations to come.

    My fellow citizens:

I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.

Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often, the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forebearers, and true to our founding documents.

So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans.

That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened,…

India has quite a history in the Miss World beauty pageant. It’s one of the most renowned and extravagant beauty pageants to date, celebrating the many ethnic backgrounds of women across the world.

On December 13th, 2008 in Johannesburg, South Africa, one of India’s most beautiful women came incredibly close to winning the Miss World title at the Miss World 2008 beauty pageant. Parvathy Omanakuttan would have been the sixth Indian woman to be crowned. She came just as close when she was crowned First Runner Up at the Miss World Grand Finale — and that’s certainly as good to us Indians.

  • Mumbai Under Attack

Photo Courtesy: Associated PressOn Wednesday, November 26, 2008, Mumbai was attacked by what has been seen as two different terrorist groups.

Attacks were on ten different locations throughout Mumbai, terrorizing India’s financial hub, killing numerous people of people and there were even hostages being held at two luxury hotels. By late evening, Mumbai police stated that the death toll is over 80, with more than 180 wounded, in addition to nine of the attackers who were dead.

Even after six hours since the attacks, there are still gun shots being heard from the Mumbai police and the terrorists outside the Taj Mahal Hotel and Hotel Oberoi. Reports said that the terrorists who entered the Taj were targeting visitors, asking, who had a US or UK passport, and keeping them as hostages.

Our hearts and prayers go out to those who have been hurt by this tragic attack. We hope that those behind this horrible display of terrorism are found and punished for their deeds.

  • The South Asian Health Initiative
    no responses - Posted 11.08.08

Recent studies have shown that the South Asian-Indian community is highly prone to many health issues – many of which do not occur until later stages in life. However, four years ago, an organization was formed to keep those in touch with a healthier lifestyle.

In June of 2004, the South Asian Health Initiative (SAHI) was founded by New York University School of Medicine’s Center for Immigrant Health (CIH) and Center for the Study of Asian American Health (CSAAH). SAHI was developed in order to take action to the growing numbers of South Asian immigrants & families in the United States, as well as certain health needs.
