Photo Courtey: Sonu KakkarSonu Kakkar is a voice behind many hit songs. She started singing at the age of 4 & ½ and since then, music has become her drive, passion, determination & career. From working with acclaimed producers such as AR Rahman to an independent album in the works, she is a multi-talented woman! I recently had the chance to sit down with Sonu and talk about music, movies and much more!

Sonu, I’d like to say it’s a pleasure to sit down & chat with you. I read that you started singing at the age of five; tell us a little bit about how you got involved in singing.
It’s my pleasure dear :-)  Well I started singing at the age of 4 & ½; I used to sing Mata’s Bhajans in bhajan sandhyas. Music has been something I can’t live without and since childhood I had a dream to become a playback singer.

It was after you moved to Delhi that Bollywood music director Sandeep Chowta saw your singing talented in a contest and the final result was the hit track Babuji Zara Dheere Chalo. Tell us about your experience recording your song and how you felt when it became so popular!
Well it was an amazing experience recording a song for Mr. Sandeep Chowta whom I’ll be thankful forever, and that too for a film it was like a dream come true for me because it was my dream to become a playback singer. I was on cloud nine when I was recording Babuji and can’t tell u how happy I was when it became so popular. It feels really great to see people dancing to my song all over the world.

Since then you’ve become a regular playback singer in Bollywood, with such songs as “Bareilly Ke…

RajStar (a/k/a Raj Makhija) is a freelance music producer, composer, sound engineer, songwriter and musician based out of New York and Mumbai. He has been called the “next big movement” from America, with a fresh sound described as Timbaland meets AR Rahman.

RajStar was always involved with music growing up in New Jersey around a musical family as his mother sang in a traditional Indian style and his father played Tabla, an Indian percussion instrument. In addition to this, playing bass guitar and guitar in and out of school bands (i.e. marching band, jazz ensemble, percussion ensemble, out of school jazz programs, etc.) gave him a unique blend of musical sensibilities. He became interested in recording and composing music in the 7th grade when he bought himself a 4-track cassette recorder and began making songs.

  • Catching Up With Karen David

Her bio quotes her as a “stylish singer, songwriter and actress,” and she’s nothing less than these three! She was also handpicked by actor Bill Cosby to star alongside him in a TV commercial for Jell-O at the age of six. Oh, did I fail to mention that she also landed a role in the hit movie, “Batman Begins,”?

Yes, I’m talking about the one and only, Karen David, herself!

Born in Shillong – at the foot of the Himalayas – and raised in Toronto, Karen David can be coined as “ever-alluring,” and she’s never let herself be restricted or controlled by such things as ‘boundaries.’ She’s crossed hurdles, strived to prove she can be the best, and shinned in front of Hollywood and Bollywood greats.

One of Karen’s noteworthy moments, as an actress, came when she landed a supporting role in the acclaimed film, “Provoked”, alongside the actress Aishwarya Rai. This put her in the limelight with personalities in the Bollywood film industry, and the soundtrack for the film had her working with one of the best composers to come out of India, A.R. Rahman; together they wrote and recorded “Alive”, the theme song that personifies the quintessence of Kiranjit Ahluwalia’s story.

Recently Karen finished filming Universal Studios’ prequel, “The Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian”, in Cape Town, South Africa. It’s in this movie she plays the spirited, aggressive, and beautiful ‘Layla.’ The film is directed by Russell Mulcahy, and she co-stars opposite Michael Copon (One Tree Hill), Randy Couture, and Simon Quarterman.

Fall of 2008 makes the release of this film, her second EP, and an album release! It’s been a journey in the making, and I had the chance to sit down with Karen and talk about her past, present, and…
